Thanh Nguyen
Professional experience
Thanh has extensive experience supporting people with complex trauma and addiction. She is trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) and uses this, plus Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), to help clients. She is also influenced by Gestalt therapy, which focuses on the here and now during the session.
Thanh is empathetic and gentle in her therapy style, understanding that connection and rapport are the foundation for the therapeutic change to happen. When necessary, she enjoys challenging her clients to help them grow out of their comfort zone. Thanh is passionate about helping trauma survivors to understand their needs and learn assertive communication skills.
Thanh works from an Adaptive Information Processing model, that describes how certain memories are maladaptively stored in the brain, causing unhelpful beliefs and behaviours in our lives and relationships. She focuses on teaching emotional regulation skills before working on a client’s trauma. Safety and support are paramount in Thanh’s sessions; she works with a client’s nervous system to help then to desensitise and be free from the trauma.

What Thanh loves about working in mental health
“What I love about mental health is summed up in this quote from Dr Bruce Perry: “Fire can warm or consume, water can quench or drown, wind can caress or cut. And so it is with human relationships: we can both create and destroy, nurture and terrorize, traumatize and heal each other”.”
